Cool Stuff#

Here are some websites and other things I think are cool!

Software recommendations#

NOTE: These software reccomendations are centered around free and open source UNIX like systems and based on the assumption that privacy respecting software is desirable.

Web Browsers#

  • Mozilla Firefox + arkenfox user.js for privacy
  • LibreWolf The same thing as above, but preconfigured.
  • Tor Browser Extreme Anonymity Browser, great for serious threat models.
  • Links Not particularly useful, but lightweight and highly portable. Runs in the terminal or an X11 server.
  • Lynx Another text based web browser for the terminal. Not to be confused with Links.

Multimedia#

  • MPV A powerful multimedia player for the cool kids!
  • Music Player Daemon (MPD) A music player with a client/server model. Great for integrating into Linux desktops.
  • sxiv, nsxiv, or swiv A simple image viewer for X11(sxiv,nsxiv) or Wayland(swiv)
  • swayimg A customizable image viewer for Wayland based desktops.

Operating Systems#

I will NEVER recommended proprietary operating systems to anyone for normal use.

  • Alpine Linux A lightweight security focused Linux distribution
  • Gentoo A Linux distribution where you compile everything from source code
  • Void Linux Like Arch Linux, but better!
  • Devuan GNU+Linux Debian without systemd. Supports more than just sysvinit.
  • GrapheneOS The only custom Android ROM I recommend.

Games#

DOOM#

  • ZDoom A modern Doom engine compatible with many mods
  • Chocolate Doom A Doom engine for purists on modern PCs.
  • Crispy Doom A slightly less purist version of Chocolate doom with a few quality of life enhancements, the “pragmatic” vanilla experience.
  • FreeDOOM Alternative FOSS WAD files for those who don’t own Doom or Doom II, or you can install them along with the original WADs.
  • Buy Doom & Doom II Includes an enhanced engine + original DOS versions and WADS

Heretic, Hexen, Strife, etc.#

  • See “DOOM” list other than that, there’s
  • Blasphemer Alternative FOSS WAD files for those who don’t own Heretic (Unfinished, in a bit of a rough state)
  • Buy Heretic + Hexen Includes enhanced engine + original DOS versions + WADS

Quake Series#

  • QuakeSpasm A modern Quake engine, basis.
  • Quakespasm Spiked An expanded version of QuakeSpasm
  • vkQuake QuakeSpasm wiht a Vulkan renderer
  • IronWall Popular new Quake engine, I’m told that it may be more graphically efficient?
  • Yamagi Quake II Modern Quake II Engine
  • IOQuake3 Open Source port of the Quake III engine, the gold standard for fragging your friends unsullied.

Computing#

  • ToastyTech An ancient website about ancient technology. Most interesting is the “GUIs” section.
  • FrogFind A modern search engine for vintage websites. Probably usable for minimalist web browsers too.

Gaming#

  • SEGA 16 A great site to read about vintage SEGA console and the games made for them, and the newest homebrew titles!
  • SEGA Saturn, SHIRO! A website about the SEGA Saturn, it’s games, and homebrew developments
